World Cup- India V Bangladesh- 19th Feb

What do you do when you enter a tournament with the favourites tag and have a score to settle with the team, that dumped you out of the last tournament. And to add to the so-called woes you would be playing them in their backyard. India would have no better opportunity to test their preparedness for the tournament than this

After the Toss was done and Shakib had chosen, the numbers doled out were: 27 out of 38 matches were won by the team batting second. What they forgot to state that many of Bangladesh’s wins had come against the likes of Zimbabwe and Ireland

When the match did get underway , Sehwag provided the most rollicking of starts by driving the first ball he faced to the cover boundary.  It was the bowlers who blinked first by pitching it wide of the off stump and on the pads of the batsmen in the middle. No wonder that India were off to a brisk start

Just when it looked like the pair in the middle would carry on for a long time, Sehwag did something that would have propelled him into the hatelists of many millions back home. He turned his back on Sachin Tendulkar as a result of which Tendulkar had to return to the pavilion early. Gambhir came to the crease and immediately the pair set about by spreading the field and nicking the extra runs

Sehwag looked to occupy the crease and knew the runs would come if he stayed there. The ominous thing for Bangladesh was that, Gambhir’s wicket was followed by a period of manic hitting especially after the batting Powerplay was claimed. Sehwag had imposed himself upon the match and looked good for a double century. He ultimately fell when he was looking to go inside out and ended up dragging a ball onto the stumps

What looked to be a total in excess of 385 stopped at 370 because of the economical last three overs. Kohli reached a well-deserved century of the penultimate ball of the innings. To think of, this was his first World Cup match

When the teams were rolled in the morning, the stand out point was India picking three seamers. So when the chase started everybody was waiting to watch how the seamers would go about the things. Instead of the usual pyrotechnical Tamim, it was Imrul Kayes who got Bangladesh off to a flyer. He took full toll of Sreesanth and Dhoni had to ring in the bowling changes. With the kind of t he score that they had on board, winning was never going to be in doubt.  Patel lived upto the expectations of his skipper and took a four wicket haul. Yuvraj and Pathan did bowl 15 overs but with sterner tests ahead Dhoni needs to pick another spinner in the team

As expected at the break time, India did not have to break a sweat to win the match and the batting looks good to carry India to the farther stages of the tournament

PS: A friend of mine reminded me that the last time an Indian scored 175 in the World Cup, India went on to win the World Cup!!

Final : India V Sri Lanka

Tendulkar has finally become the most decorated player in World Cricket. After having the hefty tag of ‘God’ attached to him for close to a decade now, World Cup was the only thing that was missing from him. If it was him who carried the hopes of the cricket fans in India, then today it was payback time for him. The generation of players that were inspired by him bought home the cup. Nothing encapsulated this better than what Kohli said. He said “ He carried the burden for 21 years, now is our time to carry him” The match itself started off in a misleading manner as the captains were not sure of what the other meant to do and were steadfast in the belief that they won the toss. In the end, the referee wanted the toss to be conducted. In what has been a superb turnaround from 2003 final, Zaheer started this final in a superb manner- he bowled three maidens on the trot. On the other hand, the surprise selection for final, Sreesanth endured a tough time- exactly the way he started off t...

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

BREAKING NEWS: Allu Arjun and Ravi Teja from Telugu movies make a fleeting appearance in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Doesn't matter that they appear in a TV footage in the movie From the time it was announced that Anil Kapoor would be a part of the Mission Impossible franchise, it was marked as an awaited movie in India. It was widely anticipated that he would play a major role in the movie. Though he serves as a major connecting link in the movie or rather the main reason, why the movie moves to India, he is projected as a lusting billionaire One of the very good things about the movie is its humour content. There are a lot of subtle one-liners by the guy who operates the computer and is the technical guru in the movie. The movie is about an evil mind getting his hand on nuclear warhead and the mission is to stop a full blown war between USA and Russia There are a lot of things that are interlinked in the movie. For example, at the beginning of the mission when it’s sa...

Cameraman Ganga tho Rambabu review

When asked his opinion on Monty Panesar, the legendary leg spinner, Shane Warne said “Monty hasn’t played 33 Tests, he has played the same Test 33 times.” Hilarious, it surely was, but it also tells us that the lack of variety can never go unnoticed. Puri Jagannadh is also treading the same path as Monty Panesar now. His movies have become monotonous. No two ways about it. Protagonist leading a normal life, rises in staure, opposes authority and finally, gets his way. This has been the standard flow in the majority of his movies. A more recent addition is the way they talk to/about women. In spite of all these blemishes, there are moments of brilliance in the movie, depending on your perspective that is. The scene where Pawan Kalyan confronts Prakash Raj on his knowledge about Telugu Thalli and the scene where he explains to Tamannah that every man is a poet in his own right are pointers to a brilliant dialogue writer hidden in the reckless director that we have come to k...
